The use of red ink can be traced back to ancient origins, when red pigments, such as ochre, were used to scribe on papyrus, indicating corrections and warnings, or highlighting other anomalies. This ink would have been conspicuous amongst the dark iron and sulphuric inscriptions of the ancients, no doubt eliciting the desired responses.

The more modern method of this has been experienced by us all. Who doesn't remember the stomach-dropping feeling of getting back our written work with red ink on it, a method employed by teachers, bosses, and editors alike? The memory stays with us and continues to "colour" our emotions when we see it in our ledgers, notebooks, and other writings that we offer up for evaluation. The negative, psychological impact of its glaring presence takes its toll over the years, sometimes prompting anxiety, frustration, or worse, manifesting in writing paralysis, more commonly known and experienced as writer's block.

About the Editor

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to look through my site. I hope I answer all your questions as you continue. Please send a message if you require more information. I'm here to help you avoid the familiar pangs of disappointment—or indignation—when receiving feedback for your hard-earned efforts. Schools and places of business may have found other ways to soften the blow, but how we write is how we write. It could be attributed to an awkward style, a weak voice, or incorrect usage, among other factors. Maya Angelou once said, "Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better" (October 2011), and a favourite instructor of mine once told me that when I learned the rules, I could learn how to break them. I've adopted both as personal philosophies, that I now apply to the editing process.

To qualify myself, I have 4 Degrees: a BA (English Literature), a B.Ed. (Teaching English as a Second Language); a B.Ed. (Senior, Intermediate and Junior English); and an M.Ed. (Counselling Psychology). In addition, I have taught university courses (Applied Languages); college courses (English 100, 200); continuing education courses (Writing for Business, Spelling in the Workplace, Women and Business Planning, and Report Writing), secondary and elementary grades (Language Arts), and adult and youth ESL classes. I'm qualified to teach in Ontario and British Columbia. I am familiar with MLA, APA, and the Oxford style. My career has spanned 30 years, and I have adjusted to countless computer programs, writing and plagiarism sites, and evolving rules regarding pronoun usage; I've tolerated texting language and navigated the prevalence of social media. I can turn AI writing into something that is more "human". and less detectable to other sources. Written language is not a static entity; it is thoughtful and personal, an extension of you, but it can also betray you.

I know the English Language so well that I approach all written words with a discerning eye, much to the chagrin of former students, colleagues, friends, and loved ones. People who know me hesitate to write me, as they have occasionally received their letters back with corrections...just for fun. :)  I have even used a poison pen with the odd complaint letter or "ex", often reaping desired results. I just can't help myself.

Writing and using words correctly has been a lifelong fascination for me. I see everything as written text, and while I may not remember the names of many of my students or colleagues, I see their handwriting in my mind as plain as day.

My interior world is comprised of letters, symbols, and grammar and usage rules. I navigate through my day, capturing mistakes, rewriting text in my head, and consulting the dictionary for words and usage. Can you imagine what translated text from other languages does to me? It drives me to distraction, and so do avoidable mistakes. I make them too, and that is when I wish for oversight. Careless mistakes can impact job prospects and affect letter grades, and while it shouldn't, it can be seen as a reflection of one's intelligence or thoughtlessness. I once cancelled my chiropractic appointments because his newsletter was fraught with errors. Being who I am, I convinced myself that if he didn't care enough to ensure his message was clear or to take the time to proofread, then surely he would not take care with my spine. It seemed like a red flag.

This is me, in a rather large nutshell. Using my diagnostic skills and applying what I know and understand is where I am most happy and comfortable.

I hope you will choose me to help you avoid the "red ink" before submitting your essays, theses, projects, pamphlets, menus, advertisements, signage, or for beta reading, or any other manner of writing you may have to submit for approval.
